Waterloo Station Train Shed Refurbishment
Main works duration Feb 2001 – Mar 2003

Waterloo Station is the principle mainline railway terminus serving Southern England and through the Channel Tunnel (Eurotunnel) to Continental Europe. The original terminus of the 1838 London and Southampton Railway was at Nine Elms but the line was extended to Waterloo in 1848. The 1848 station was rebuilt 5 years later in 1853 and was the subject to numerous expansions. The current station was opened in 1922 by Queen Mary and suffered severe bomb damage during World War 2. The International Terminal was built between 1989 and 1994 and earned the architect Nicholas Thomas Grimshaw the RIBA gold medal. The first high speed rail service to France started in 1994.

What we did

Following completion of the stringent selection process, Kelsey Roofing Industries (one of the leading contractors) appointed Wessex Building Products to carry out the design, manufacture and installation of the main external feature panels and fascia cladding. The panel system required close interfacing details to be developed to meet with the project's high quality standards. The Wessex Building Products cladding was required to closely interface with the specialist glazing system being installed to the main roof refurbishment. The work involved a high degree of detail design, specialist tool making and manufacture of the GRP cladding including fabrication of the secondary support steelwork carried out by our engineering department. The Whole process from design to final installation was closely monitored and controlled by our quality control system approved by the main contractor’s quality inspector.

Due to the close interfacing requirements of the GRP cladding with the main roof installation, the design, manufacture and Site installation programming was paramount to avoid any delays. The Wessex Building Products specialist design, tool making, production, and engineering capabilities provided the ideal platform. The experience of Wessex Building Products coupled with our highly trained on site installation team working in close cooperation with other interfacing trades, ensured that the whole process was successfully completed on time.
